About Collagenase SANTYL^® Ointment

What is SANTYL^® Ointment?

Collagenase SANTYL^® is an ointment used for certain kinds of skin ulcers, including chronic dermal ulcers (eg, pressure, diabetic, and venous stasis ulcers) or severely burned areas. These wounds often contain skin or other tissue that is no longer living, so it must be removed.

Sometimes the body can naturally shed this non-living tissue, as in the case of a scab. But in many skin ulcers, the tissue cannot be shed by the body, and that may result in delayed healing and/or infection. Collagenase SANTYL^® Ointment contains an enzyme called collagenase, derived from a purified bacterial culture. This medicine helps break down the proteins in non-living tissue so that they can be removed from the wound. Removal of non-living tissue makes room for new, healthy cells to form, and helps the wound to heal or close.

Follow all your doctor’s instructions about using Collagenase SANTYL^® Ointment. Generally, this medicine is applied once a day or more frequently if your dressing becomes soiled.
