How to Use Collagenase
SANTYL® Ointment

You should always follow the instructions you receive from your healthcare provider. Applying SANTYL® Ointment as instructed will help you achieve the best results.

Step 1: Cleanse the wound site prior to application

Use a wound cleanser, gauze pad, or sterile saline to gently clean the wound area. Any time a cleanser is used, make sure to rinse the wound with sterile saline before applying SANTYL® Ointment.

Step 2: Apply SANTYL® Ointment

Although SANTYL® Ointment does not harm healthy tissue, be sure to apply it only to the wound and not the surrounding skin. Do not apply it with your bare fingers. Based on instructions received from your doctor, you can use a sterile glove, gauze pad, or applicator stick to apply the ointment to the wound area in the thickness of a nickel. Never use SANTYL® Ointment in or near your eyes.

Step 3: Ensure a moist environment

If your wound is dry or hardening, your doctor may provide instructions on how to moisten your wound when applying SANTYL® Ointment. Moisture helps release the active ingredient in SANTYL® to make the ointment most effective. Without the right amount of moisture, SANTYL® Ointment may not work properly.

If you are unsure about how to best moisten the wound, be sure to ask your doctor.

Step 4: Use an appropriate wound dressing

Do not use dressings containing silver or iodine, because these
substances may interfere with the effectiveness of the active ingredient in SANTYL® Ointment.

Step 5: Monitor use

Reapply SANTYL® Ointment once a day or when wound dressings are soiled.

If infection develops:
Be sure to talk to your doctor right away if you think an infection has developed.
